The hike to Schuhflicker Lake in Großarl is a wonderful way to experience the impressive mountain landscape of the Salzburg region. Schuhflicker Lake is a picturesque mountain lake located at an altitude of about 2,100 meters, surrounded by majestic peaks. The hiking trail is well-marked and leads through diverse landscapes, from dense forests to open alpine meadows.
As a local, I recommend hiking to Schuhflicker Lake only after July, as the trail is fully snow-free and the lake is free of ice and snow by then. The hike is moderate in difficulty and takes about two to three hours round trip. Don’t forget to bring your swimsuit, as the lake invites a refreshing dip. Along the way, there are numerous photo opportunities, especially from the viewpoint at Schuhflicker, which offers a fantastic view of the surrounding Alpine panorama. There are no places to stop for food on the way, so make sure to bring enough water and snacks.
The hike to Schuhflicker Lake takes about two to three hours for the round trip, depending on your pace and breaks. Plan about four hours in total to fully enjoy the scenery and the tranquility by the lake.
The hike is moderate and requires a good basic fitness level. The path is well-marked, but some sections are steep and require sure-footedness. Sturdy hiking boots are highly recommended.
The best time for this hike is from July to October, when the trail is snow-free and the lake is ice-free. During these months, the temperatures are pleasant, and the landscape is at its most beautiful.
I recommend arriving by car to the parking lot below the Aualm. Please note that the road to the parking lot is a toll road, and you'll need to pay a fee, which can be done by card. From there, the hike begins. The parking lot is easily accessible and offers plenty of spaces for hikers.
