Schafberg

General

The hike up the Schafberg or the ride on the Schafbergbahn is a must-do if you’re in Salzburg. The Schafberg, at 1,783 meters, offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the lakes and mountains of the Salzkammergut region. The hike starts in St. Wolfgang and takes you through picturesque forests and meadows to the summit. Alternatively, you can take the historic Schafbergbahn, which will comfortably take you to the top. Once you arrive, you’re greeted with a fantastic view.

Insider tips

As a local, I recommend staying at the hotel on the Schafberg summit. This not only gives you the chance to experience the magical sunrise and sunset, but also allows you to enjoy the peace and special atmosphere on the mountain once most tourists return on the last Schafbergbahn. An additional tip: from the top of the Schafberg, it’s worth taking the short hike to “Spinnerin,” which offers even more impressive views.

Duration

The hike up to the Schafberg takes about three to four hours, depending on your pace and breaks. If you take the Schafbergbahn, the ride takes about 40 minutes.

Difficulty

The hike up to the Schafberg is moderate in difficulty and requires good fitness and sure-footedness. The trail is well-marked, but some sections can be steep and challenging. Sturdy hiking boots are recommended.

Season

The best time for the hike or the ride on the Schafbergbahn is from May to October, when the trails are snow-free and easy to navigate. During these months, the temperatures are pleasant, and the visibility is usually clear.

Getting there

I recommend arriving by car or public transportation to St. Wolfgang. From there, you can either start the hike or take the Schafbergbahn. There are parking options available, and public transportation is well-connected.
