gorge
The Vorderkaser Gorge in Salzburg is a fascinating natural monument, stretching over 400 meters in length and 80 meters in depth. The narrow, rocky canyon offers an impressive experience with its steep walls and the roaring water of the Ödenbach, which carves its way through the gorge. The hike to Vorderkaser Gorge begins in the Vorderkaser Nature Reserve, which also includes a popular natural swimming area. Access to the gorge is via well-developed walkways and steps, allowing for safe exploration.
A special tip is the hike along the Stone Age Experience Trail, which features six stations that bring the prehistoric history of the region closer to you. At the end of the gorge, you’ll find the Vorderkaser snack station, where you can refresh yourself after your hike. Parking directly in front of the gorge and the snack station is free, making the arrival especially convenient. Don’t forget to wear sturdy shoes and bring your camera, as the gorge offers numerous spectacular photo opportunities.
The hike through Vorderkaser Gorge takes about 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on your pace and breaks. Plan a total of about two to three hours to explore the gorge and its surroundings at a relaxed pace.
The hike is easy to moderate and suitable for all age groups. The paths are well-maintained, but some sections can be slippery, so sturdy hiking shoes are recommended.
The best time to visit Vorderkaser Gorge is from May to October, when the weather is pleasant and the paths are easy to walk. During these months, the gorge is at its most impressive.
I recommend arriving by car, as there is free parking directly in front of the gorge and the snack station. Alternatively, public transportation is also an option, followed by a short walk to the entrance of the gorge.
