The Tappenkarsee in Pongau is a hidden gem in the Radstädter Tauern. Located at 1,762 meters above sea level, the lake is nestled between steep cliffs and lush alpine meadows. Visit Tappenkarsee in the summer to avoid leftover snow, which can make the paths slippery. Be sure to wear sturdy hiking shoes, as the trail is partly rocky. A special highlight is the sunrise at the lake – getting up early is worth it for this natural spectacle. Additionally, on your way back, you can stop at the Tappenkarseehütte to enjoy regional specialties.

The hike to Tappenkarsee takes about 3 to 4 hours round trip. The well-marked path takes you through diverse landscapes, offering plenty of opportunities for photo stops. Make sure to plan enough time to fully enjoy the beauty of the lake and its surroundings.

The hike to Tappenkarsee is moderate in difficulty. It requires good fitness and surefootedness, especially on the rocky sections. In summer, the trails are well accessible, but they can become slippery when wet. Proper preparation and the right equipment are therefore important.

The best way to reach Tappenkarsee is by car, as there are parking facilities in Kleinarl. From there, the hike begins. Public transportation can also take you to Kleinarl, but driving offers more flexibility. The starting point of the hike is well-marked and easy to find.
