hike
The hike up the Zwölferhorn near Lake Wolfgang is a popular tour for hiking enthusiasts. The route starts at the parking lot near the Lärchenhütte and leads you through varied landscapes up to the summit of the Zwölferhorn at 1,521 meters. A special highlight of this hike is the breathtaking view of Lake Wolfgang and the surrounding mountains. The trail offers both challenging climbs and more leisurely sections.
As a local, I recommend bringing coins, as the fee for the road to the parking lot at the Lärchenhütte can only be paid in cash. It’s best to start early in the morning to avoid the crowds of tourists using the cable car. Along the way, several viewpoints invite you to take short breaks and enjoy the spectacular scenery. Alternatively, you can also take the cable car comfortably to the Zwölferhorn and enjoy the magnificent panoramic view at the top.
The hike takes about 3 to 4 hours for the ascent and return, depending on your pace and breaks. Be sure to allow enough time to fully enjoy the landscape and the views.
The hike is moderately difficult and requires good basic fitness and sure-footedness. Some sections are steep, but the paths are well-marked and maintained, making the hike suitable for less experienced walkers as well.
The best time for this hike is from May to October. During these months, the paths are snow-free, and the temperatures are pleasant. Particularly in autumn, the colorful forests offer a picturesque backdrop.
If you want to do the hike, it's best to arrive by car. Remember to bring coins for the road fee. Alternatively, if you prefer to use the cable car, you can take public transportation to St. Gilgen and then ride the cable car to the summit.
