Spinnerin

General

The hike to the Spinnerin, a peak next to the Schafberg, is a great tip for anyone wanting to enjoy a spectacular view. The trail runs along steep cliffs and offers impressive panoramic views of the surrounding lakes and mountains. The top of the Spinnerin is marked by a statue of the Madonna, offering a unique view of the Schafberg’s steep rock faces.

Insider tips

As a local, I recommend first hiking to the Schafberg or taking the Schafbergbahn. Once you’re on top of the Schafberg, you can stay at the Hotel Schafbergspitze. This is especially worthwhile because you get to experience the magical sunrise and sunset, and the Schafberg is much quieter after the last train. From the Schafbergspitze, it’s just a short, easy walk to the Spinnerin. Here, you can enjoy the stunning view and see the steep rock faces of the Schafberg from a different perspective.

Duration

The hike from St. Wolfgang via the Schafberg to the Spinnerin takes about five hours.

Difficulty

The hike is difficult and requires good basic fitness as well as sure-footedness. The path is well-marked, but some sections can be steep and exposed, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended.

Season

The best time for the hike to Spinnerin is from June to September, when the paths are snow-free and easy to walk. During these months, the temperatures are pleasant, and the landscape is at its full beauty.

Getting there

I recommend arriving by car to the valley station of the Schafbergbahn. Alternatively, you can also take public transport. From there, you can either hike or take the train up to the Schafberg.
