Makartplatz

General

Makartplatz in Salzburg is a beautiful square, perfect for a relaxing break. Named after the famous Salzburg painter Hans Makart, the square holds historical and cultural significance. Here you’ll find important buildings like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s residence and the Salzburg State Theatre. Especially in spring, when the magnolias are in full bloom, the square offers a picturesque scene and is perfect for taking photos.

Insider tips

As a local, I recommend visiting Makartplatz in March or April, when the magnolia trees are in full bloom. The beautiful pink and white blossoms make it one of the best photo spots in Salzburg. Sit on one of the benches around the “Caldera” sculpture by Anthony Cragg and enjoy the view of the surrounding historic buildings. A visit to the nearby Mozart Residence or a walk through the Mirabell Gardens is a perfect addition to your stop at Makartplatz.

Duration

A visit to Makartplatz takes about 30 minutes to an hour, depending on how long you want to enjoy and photograph the surroundings. Plan a bit more time if you also want to visit the nearby attractions.

Difficulty

Makartplatz is easily accessible and suitable for all age groups. The paths are well maintained and also accessible for strollers and wheelchairs.

Season

The best time to visit Makartplatz is in spring, especially in March and April when the magnolias are in bloom. Summer is also pleasant, offering plenty of shaded spots.

Getting there

I recommend arriving on foot, by bike, or by public transport, as Makartplatz is centrally located in Salzburg and easy to reach. Parking nearby is limited and very expensive.
