Viewpoint
Lamprecht Cave, also known as Lamprechtsofen, is one of the largest cave systems in Europe, located near Weißbach bei Lofer in the Salzburg region. With a total length of about 60 kilometers and a depth of 1,735 meters, it ranks among the deepest caves in the world. Part of the cave is accessible to visitors, with safe pathways, stairs, and walkways leading approximately 700 meters into the cave. Its cool interior makes it a popular destination on hot summer days.
As a local, I recommend taking a warm jacket when visiting Lamprecht Cave, as the temperatures inside are cool year-round. The cave tour takes you through several tunnels and ends at a large platform offering a fantastic view of the illuminated parts of the cave. After heavy rainfall, the cave may be closed due to flood risk, so it’s important to check the current opening hours before your visit. Guided tours are especially interesting, offering deeper insights into the cave and its history. From November to April, the cave is only open on weekends, so plan your visit accordingly.
The visit to the accessible parts of Lamprecht Cave takes about 1 to 1.5 hours. If you book a guided tour, it can last between 4 and 7 hours, depending on the tour.
The visit to Lamprecht Cave is suitable for all age groups. The paths are well-secured, but you should be sure-footed and wear sturdy shoes, as some sections can be steep and slippery.
Lamprecht Cave can be visited year-round. It is especially a pleasant retreat during the summer due to its cool temperatures. Guided tours also offer fascinating insights in autumn and winter, but from November to April, the cave is only open on weekends.
I recommend arriving by car, as the cave is best accessed via the B311 between Lofer and Saalfelden. This way, you have the flexibility to explore the surrounding area at your own pace.
