As a local, I highly recommend visiting in the fall. During this season, the sea of fog around the Große Barmstein is particularly spectacular, creating a mystical and unforgettable atmosphere for photos. Pack a picnic and enjoy the sunset from the top – it’s truly a highlight!

Duration

The hike to the Großer Barmstein takes about 2 to 3 hours. The trail is well-marked and passes through diverse terrain. Be sure to allow enough time to fully enjoy the views and nature along the way.

Difficulty

The ascent to the Großer Barmstein is moderately difficult. There are some steep sections and rocky parts that require surefootedness. With some stamina and the right equipment, the hike is quite manageable.

Season

The Großer Barmstein is worth visiting year-round, but autumn is especially recommended. The sea of fog is particularly spectacular then, and the temperatures are perfect for hiking. In summer, you can enjoy clear views and longer days.

Getting there

The best way to get there is by car. You can park in Marktschellenberg, where the hike begins. Public transport from Salzburg is also possible by bus, but it takes a bit more time.
