The Gaisberg, Salzburg’s local mountain, offers a spectacular view of the city and the surrounding alpine landscape. It’s especially popular for breathtaking sunsets. At the summit, you’ll be rewarded with a panorama perfect for unforgettable photos, and you can often watch paragliders taking off – a fascinating sight.
As a local, I recommend heading up well before sunset to secure a good spot. Bring a blanket and a picnic to fully enjoy the atmosphere. In autumn, you can often witness spectacular seas of fog, making the scenery even more impressive.
The hike from Schloss Aigen to the summit of Gaisberg takes about 2 hours. For the round trip, you should plan around 3.5 hours in total.
The hike up the Gaisberg is of moderate difficulty and manageable even for less experienced hikers. The trail is well-marked, and you’ll be rewarded with many beautiful viewpoints.
The best months to visit are from May to October, when the weather is stable and the days are longer. Especially in autumn, the sunsets are spectacular, and the sea of fog adds an extra magical touch to the experience.
You can reach the parking lot at Gaisberg in about 30 minutes by car from the city center. Alternatively, you can take bus line 151, which takes you directly to the top. If you prefer to hike, you can park at Schloss Aigen and climb to the summit in about 2 hours.
