Insider tips

As a local, I recommend visiting the Freisaalweg in the late afternoon or early evening, when the sun sets behind the Hohensalzburg Fortress. This natural spectacle bathes the fortress in a warm, golden light. Along the path, there are also hidden trails leading to beautiful viewpoints. Additionally, there are many benches along the way where you can rest. A short detour to Leopoldskroner Weiher, which is just a short walk away, is also worth it and offers a picturesque backdrop.

Duration

The walk along the Freisaalweg usually takes about an hour, depending on your individual pace and any breaks you take. However, for a relaxed stroll with occasional stops, it's best to plan for around an hour and a half.

Difficulty

The Freisaalweg is an easy walking path, suitable for beginners and families with children. The well-maintained trail has no significant inclines and is easily passable, even in slightly wetter conditions.

Season

The best time to visit the Freisaalweg is in spring and summer when nature is in full bloom and the sun sets behind the fortress. Autumn also offers a beautiful backdrop with its colorful foliage. The path can also be charming in winter, but sturdy footwear is recommended.
